There should be separate building rules for the coastal areas of Karachi. This was stressed by the Disaster Management Committee of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST). The technical committee of the body held its meeting here on Tuesday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the FUUAST, Dr Syed Iqbal Mohsin, presided over the meeting. He was of the view that the Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) should come up with separate building rules for the coastal areas of the city.

Dr Mohsin further suggested that the Geological Survey of Pakistan should study the 'shocks' that are being felt in the coastal areas of the metropolis and submit its report so that the rumours should come to an end.

He also pointed out that necessary awareness should be created among the people in order to help check such rumours.

Need was also stressed for reviewing the seismic zone map of the country.

A former federal minister, Islam Nabi, was of the view that seismic survey of buildings of Karachi is essential. Director of Met Office, Salahuddin, said that six observatories are recording every jolt.

He further pointed out that new equipment are being acquired for Karachi. Dr Jamil Kazmi and Dr Naimatullah also expressed their views on the occasion.
